The mountains, plateau, and mesa that make up the forest will always provide a scenic backdrop and thus a component of the quality of life in the area.

This beautiful log structure provides visitor information, exhibits, and an interpretive hiking trail. If you have time, browse the gift shop or join the visitor center staff for a nature hike, or listen to a presentation by some local experts on wildlife, wildflowers, birds, mushrooms, or our thriving population of moose! Visitors can purchase forest product permits and recreation passes at the visitor center.

The trail was built to serve as a short scenic route out of the Visitors Center providing hikers with a couple of vista points overlooking Deep Slough, Ward Lake, and the rest of the valley below. It is a graveled trail and is used as an interpretive trail.

Because of the scenic view it offers, the trail is one of the most used trails on the Grand Mesa. It is a very short trail which is paved for the entire distance, making for a quick and easy hike. The trail travels out to a rim overlooking a series of lakes and reservoirs and then circles back to the parking area in a loop. At this overlook there are interpretive signs and information concerning the glacial construction of the lakes and reservoirs below.

The County Line Ski System is located in the central portion of the Grand Mesa. The trails receive frequent grooming to a moderate level of difficulty. Trails cover 7.8 miles and offer winter trail loop options in open coniferous forest.

Mesa Lake Picnic area is a great family day use recreation area. There are several picnic tables scattered around Mesa Lake. There is a toilet, ample parking and it is a universally accessible area. There is a per vehicle per day charge - cash or check only.

The trail follows the shoreline, wandering through spruce trees. Bridges cross the water crossings and a few benches have been placed along the trail. Along the eastern shore, about 0.6 miles from the trailhead, the trail travels through a talus slope of basalt boulders. Fishing can be good in Mesa Lake, and dogs are welcome on a leash. Bring mosquito repellent during the summer months or after a wet spell in early fall.
